The water was mind-numbingly cold, and Missy couldn’t catch her breath as the three women were whisked along with the swift-flowing current. Still clutching her shotgun, she did her best to avoid obstacles as they rushed toward her.

Twice, she had banged her right knee against rock outcroppings, but both were only minor impacts.

She heard the women behind her gasping; the only way she knew for certain they were still with her. Nobody had the wherewithal to speak; it was too much of a chore just riding the current and hoping a scab didn’t yank you beneath the surface at any moment.

For some reason, the chill of the water had surprised her; Missy had no idea if it was still Spring, or if Winter had come upon them.

Her answer came almost as soon as the thought entered her mind. The soaring stone ceiling of the cave suddenly disappeared, and Missy saw it was twilight. But that wasn’t all; snow was falling. Not just flurries, but a solid snowfall that could cover tracks in just minutes and freeze an unprepared person to death – such as someone wet – in an instant.

It was then that Missy realized she didn’t even know what month it was. It had to be late November, or perhaps December. The snow told her it had to have been one or the other.

She felt herself slowing, and as she spun around in the water, she realized the narrow waterway that had exited the mountain’s base had opened up into a wide, flowing river, shallow, but 120 to 140 feet wide. Better still, with the waning daylight, she could see into the crystal-clear water, assuring her that no scabs threatened to pull her under and shred her into ribbons.

“Swim to the edge!” she shouted, and waved her hand clutching the shotgun toward the north bank. It was closest, and it was very shallow, with visible pebbles and larger rocks to grab hold of.

Melissa Walsh’s feet brushed the bottom and she straightened out her legs, realizing she could now stand. She did so, then fought against the current as she walked the rest of the way to the edge, looking back to make sure Lana and Dr. Greig had done the same.

Both had. They reached the edge and stepped onto a snow-covered piece of flat land by the bank of the river.

“We need to keep moving,” said Dr. Greig. “We’re soaked, and we’ll die of exposure.”

“Where the hell are we supposed to go?” asked Lana. “We can’t go back through the mountain, plus the scabs are chasing us.” She scanned all around them, and added, “Where are they?”

Missy and Dr. Greig turned their attention to the mountain. From this side, Earth Canyon Retreat’s structure was not visible, and it appeared to be nothing more than a mountain with a large cave at its base. But something was strange about the surface of the mountain itself.

“Do you see that?” shivered Missy. “My old eyes aren’t so great, but what is that? Doesn’t look like dirt and it doesn’t quite look like rock.
